Nairobi, 11 December: Violent tribal clashes in the south of Ethiopia in recent months have left at least 60 people dead and almost 200 wounded, according to reliable reports received by the UN. Hundreds of families have fled their homes after skirmishes between the Borana and Garre tribes, who have a long history of fighting over land use, a UN source told IRIN. Full Report

Border Commission Begins Hearing Cases

The border commission charged with reaching mutual agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea on the demarcation of their common border began hearing the cases of the two countries in the Hague on Monday. The deputy ambassador at the Eritrean embassy in Nairobi told IRIN on Tuesday that the Eritrean Foreign Minister Ali Sayyid Abdallah had addressed the panel yesterday and that the presentation of the Eritrean case would continue today. CAMPAIGN AGAINST TERRORISM: Wanted sheikh captured in swoop along Kenya's border with Somalia

AN ALLEGED senior al-Qa'ida member accused of complicity in the 1998 bombing of the US embassy in Kenya has been arrested by Kenyan authorities. Sheikh Ahmed Salim Swedan, who was on a list of America's 22 most-wanted terrorists, was held at Mandera, on Kenya's Somalia border. DESPITE U.S. APPEAL, CHRISTIANS REMAIN IN SAUDI JAIL

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Saudi Arabia has refused a U.S. appeal to release more than a dozen Christians accused of practicing their faith. The Christians were arrested in a series of raids that began in July in the Saudi city of Jedda. U.S. diplomats raised the issue with the kingdom and were told that the Christians would be released.
